There are 84 physical yoga postures, or asanas, in the traditional practice (although the exact number depends on who you consult). When you take recent modes into account, that number rises to nearly 300. Add in variations and recently installed modes and you’ll be in the thousands. But in terms of basic poses that set the tone for your entire practice, there are three yoga poses that stand out (or stand out) from the crowd. As with most of life’s basics, it’s one of the most deceptively simple.
Although some practitioners prefer more challenging poses, they do consider inversions HandstandArm scales such as Crow poseor any quirky, eye-catching shape that comes to mind—there’s profound power in some basic poses. They’re the poses you return to again and again that provide grounding, alignment, and integration.
The following yoga poses show how they appear in all other forms, whether on your mat or throughout the day.
3 essential yoga poses for any practice
When you think of yoga, what poses immediately come to mind? If it’s one of this trio, we’re right there with you.
1. Mountain pose

He’s just… standing there. right? Yes and no. Mountain pose (Tadasana) is a microcosm of all yoga. It’s alignment, balance, effort, and ease, all folded into a pose you hold almost every day of your life (although perhaps in a slightly more causal form).
Mountain provides an opportunity to check your spinal alignment, your ability to land through your feet, and in sync with your breath before you attempt to move into the literal ups and downs of any exercise. The real strength and stability here will result in a stable and secure foundation, giving you more room to play as you practice every other pose.
2. Downward facing dog

A pose you come back to again and again in most flows, Downward facing dog (Adho Mukha Svanasana) is both utilitarian and creative at the same time. Although it may be frustrating to hear teachers refer to this as a middle-class “rest position,” there is something to be said for reframing Down Dog as a space for reset and letting go rather than effort and effort.
The pose itself is one of yoga’s magic tricks, building strength throughout the body while stretching the arms, legs and shoulders. When you learn how to find alignment and synchronize your breath while upside down, it becomes a little easier to do it elsewhere. Down Dog is also honest. If you are experiencing tension, tightness or misalignment, it will become clear here – and therefore easier to address.
3. Savasana

It’s not that wrong Savasana Known as Corpse Pose – It’s a Little Death, Definitive Edition. This situation is about no Doing so, which can be incredibly challenging. But it’s also crucial. Some teachers (and students) assert that a yoga class is incomplete without at least five minutes of savasana.
The form and mindfulness of Savasana allows your body and mind space to integrate everything that has occurred during your practice. Without it, as with the failure to align breath with movement, yoga is just another category of movement. The stillness you’ll find here is medicine, and the real reason so many people regularly reach for their mat.
