Years ago I discovered the skin health benefits of tallow. While this DIY Grease solution bars It was my favorite, I wanted something with a softer consistency. The result is a nourishing whipped tallow balm, ideal even for sensitive skin.
I love how it makes my skin feel silky and smooth. Plus, it contains natural ingredients that I feel good about using on my kids, too. I have really seen a huge difference in my country Jr.’s eczema Scars after using grease. Here’s why tallow balm is so great, how to use it, and how to make your own!
Benefits of tallow balm
Unlike other moisturizers and lotions that contain plant oils, tallow balm is a unique creation. It all starts with animal fat (usually beef fat, but lamb works well too) which is then refined and refined. It is similar to lard that comes from pigs.
The best fats used in beef tallow come from grass-fed or leaf tallow. This leafy fat is what is found around the kidneys. Tallow balm benefits the skin in several ways.
Since the tallow comes from an animal source, it nourishes and penetrates our skin beautifully. You can use it for lip balms, soaps, moisturizers and ointments. As a balm, it helps in treating dry skin, eczema and anti-aging.
Many people use Tallow balm for the skin Because it is rich in naturally occurring fatty acids that are very similar to our skin’s oils. It’s perfect for all ages from kids and up. I have used tallow balm for my son’s eczema and it is great for diaper rash too.
Ingredients of tallow balm
You can just use regular tallow on your skin, but it’s very sticky and difficult to spread. The easiest way is to make a tallow balm made from a mixture of tallow and liquid oils. This makes applying much easier and you get the best of both worlds. The result is a deeply nourishing beef tallow moisturizer that works well for face and body care.
Some recipes add shea butter, coconut oil, or jojoba oil. I like to keep things simple and mainly use extra virgin olive oil here. I also added a little rosehip seed oil. Since rosehip is an astringent, it helps absorb the grease a little better, plus it has amazing skin restoring properties. This is anti-aging Rosehip facial moisturizer He is a reader favorite!
You don’t even need beeswax to thicken this. You can also add some of your favorite essential oils, although this is completely optional. Frankincense, chamomile, and lavender essential oils are good oils to consider.
How to make tallow balm
This recipe looks like a whipped body butter, or you can skip the whipping step and it will feel more like an ointment. Either way works, but I prefer the feel of the whipped version. If you’re looking for a simple tallow balm recipe, this one works beautifully because it’s customizable and gentle enough for sensitive skin.
Another question I often hear is how to make tallow balm less greasy. Adding lightweight oils like rosehip seed oil and whisking the finishing balm helps create a lighter texture that absorbs more easily into the skin. Olive oil is a heavier oil, so you can substitute it with a lighter oil (like grapeseed) if you need something less moisturizing.
Where to get tallow
Okay, so I’ve probably convinced you how great tallow is for the skin… but where do you get it? You may find high-quality, grass-fed beef tallow from a local farmer in your area. If not, I’d also like to have mine Grease online here.
The resulting grease has a yellowish-white color and may or may not have a fat odor. Further purification helps eliminate the smell of grease and produces a snow-white color.
How to purify grease
If you use tallow for cooking (or even to make soap), the smell is not strong enough to make a difference. For skin care products, you’ll need purified tallow. You can find a tutorial on how to do this rendering tallow here, But here’s how to refine it further.
- Add 2 cups of melted lard, 5 cups of water, and 3 tablespoons of salt to the crock pot. You can also double the amounts used if you have more lard.
- Set it to low heat and simmer for about an hour.
- Strain the hot liquid into a large bowl through a fine mesh sieve lined with paper towels, a very clean tea towel, or a T-shirt cloth.
- Leave the bowl to cool in the refrigerator until it is firm.
- Remove the block of hardened lard from the top of the salted water and turn it over. On the underside, you may see some brown bits, scrape all these off.
- You can repeat this process again if desired.
- Allow the grease to air dry at room temperature until all the water has evaporated (otherwise it can go rancid).
Once your tallow is purified, you’re ready to make your own whipped tallow balm at home!

Frequently asked questions about tallow balm recipe
1. My tallow conditioner is too hard/soft.
Some tallow is harder than others, and some people prefer their tallow conditioner to be harder or softer. If you want a softer version, add more oil. If you want a harder version, reduce the oil or add a little more beeswax.
2. Can I use tallow balm for my face?
Yes! I do all the time. Whipped tallow balm on my face makes it silky smooth.
3. My tallow smells like beef, can I use it?
Yes, but cleanse it first. See directions above. The beef smell was still very slight after disinfection, but it wasn’t strong.
4. I bought the lard from the store/farmer, do I still have to filter it?
Yes, most likely, unless it has been refined several times and does not have a strong meaty smell.
5. Can I use lamb or pork fat?
Lard is lard and is too soft for this recipe (but it makes great French fries!). Lamb tallow from lamb should work, but I haven’t tried it.
