Is Daryl Hannah autistic? The diagnosis made fans criticize her controversial portrayal in Love Story

Love Story is a live-action TV series that dramatizes the 1990s romance between John F. Kennedy Jr. and Caroline Bessette. (The couple died in 1999 in a plane crash.)

There is another side story explored in the series – since Daryl dated Hannah Kennedy for several years, a character named after her appeared on the show. Hannah, now in her 60s, was diagnosed with autism as a child. In a 2014 interview with Dan Rather available at YouTubeShe told Rather that she didn’t “communicate well” when she was young and usually shook all the time. She credits her mother for helping her succeed, rather than institutionalizing her, and allowing her the space to explore acting.

Through the film, Hannah says she was able to make her dreams come true. In one of the interviews (trans todayShe explained: “Acting for me was about going to the Land of Oz and meeting the Tin Man.”

Hannah did not directly accuse the writers of “Love Story” of making fun of her autism, but she criticized them for being deceitful and misogynistic. In an opinion article by L New York TimesHannah criticized those involved in creating “Love Story” for being insulting and evil. “These are not creative trappings of character. They are assertions about behavior — and they are false,” she wrote. “The actions and actions attributed to me are incorrect.”

Many viewers have noted that Daryl Hannah’s character in “Love Story” seems contrived, and Hannah’s fans are not keeping quiet about what they also see as an unfair misrepresentation of her autism. One said on X“The fact that she has autism makes me wonder if they intentionally portrayed her in this way that was able to make fun of her.” Even celebrity Rosanna Arquette continued Instagram Supported Hannah by posting a throwback photo of the two of them with the caption, “Her portrayal on live is b*********. Her love with JFK Jr. was real.”

It is not clear whether or not “Love Story” took Hannah’s autism into account when writing the role of her fictional doppelgänger. (As a side note, the creators did not consult with Hannah, Kennedy family members, or Bissette, so the entire show was filmed without any official support.) However, Daryl Hannah’s character certainly seems to be brimming with what look like exaggerated autistic symptoms.
