We haven’t had much snow since we moved (or anywhere!), but in the past the kids loved to play outside for hours when it snowed. There’s something almost sacred about emerging from the cold into a steaming cup of covered cocoa cream. However, I wanted to find an alternative to the traditional hot cocoa mix filled with refined sugar and powdered milk.
So I set out to create a healthier, simpler, all-homemade, richer-tasting version of what I grew up with. This isn’t just another hot chocolate mix recipe, it’s real nutritional comfort in a cup. Once you know how to make good hot chocolate, the packets will never taste the same.
Thanks to this recipe, I’m always happy to oblige when my kids ask for cocoa after hours outside. It has become our version of a classic childhood ritual. This is made with nutritious hot chocolate ingredients that I feel good about serving.
This hot chocolate combines cocoa powder, healthy fats, Warm spices and natural sweeteners for a warm cup of cocoa. You can use organic whole milk for a traditional flavor, or substitute coconut or almond milk for a dairy-free version. Coconut milk has a higher fat content which makes it creamier. Gelatin helps thicken it and adds health benefits to hair, nails and intestines.
Instead of refined white or brown sugar, I prefer maple syrup or honey. They add natural sweetness, minerals and antioxidants. A pinch of sea salt enhances the chocolate flavour, and a bit of vanilla extract complements everything beautifully. Sometimes I shave a little dark chocolate for extra richness, but this recipe works perfectly with cocoa powder and is delicious and doesn’t require chocolate chips.
The secret to good hot chocolate is high-quality chocolate and healthy fats. Adding butter or coconut oil creates that velvety texture that most people associate with melted milk chocolate, without the processed ingredients. And if you need to avoid dairy, coconut milk or coconut oil adds enough fat to recreate the right consistency.
This recipe is incredibly flexible. Do you like it sweeter? Add a touch of maple syrup or raw honey. Do you want it very rich? Add a little chopped dark chocolate at the end. For a classic finishing touch, top with real food whipped cream.
If you grew up on instant packets, their taste will be deeper and more complex thanks to real cocoa powder, healthy fats, and a pinch of sea salt. Sea salt helps balance the sweetness and reduces the bitterness in the cocoa. Learning how to make good hot chocolate is surprisingly simple.
This can be easily customized to your preferences and I’d love to hear your differences in the comments. I like to add a little cayenne pepper for a spicy version or some frozen berries for hot cocoa. this Hazelnut hot chocolate recipe It is also a family favorite.
Optionally, you can also add some anti-inflammatory turmeric, hormone-balancing maca root, or antimicrobial cinnamon. Cinnamon also makes it taste like Mexican hot chocolate. Homemade marshmallows with honey and gelatin are a family favorite too!
