In 2015, Be my eyes The app, a free virtual sighted assistant, has been launched. APH VisionAware published a post by Audrey Dimmitt, Peer Counselor, sharing her reaction and how her eye doctor recommended it. “As an ophthalmologist, I have a variety of special tools available to help people with low vision,” Dr. Henahan explained. “But sometimes there’s no substitute for a pair of eyes to see something.”
Today, Be My Eyes has grown and is used by nearly one million blind and visually impaired users as well as 10 million sighted volunteers around the world. “Using volunteer help has worked well, and I have had great experiences,” said Trina Basak, a peer counselor. View the property
Be My Eyes is an app where sighted volunteers provide visual information to people with blindness and low vision. By simply clicking the “Contact a Volunteer” button on the home screen, you can get help with many daily tasks. Do you need to read the food label? Find something fallen on the floor? Checking clothes for stains? Read the instructions for a new product? Get a description of the image? Be My Eyes can help.
“My husband, Bill, and I use Be My Eyes every day for all of our reading needs. We read the daily mail and menus we receive from the chef in our independent living community,” said Dale Kane, a peer counselor. “We also use it to determine if there are stains on clothes.”
Additionally, you can create a private group of sighted volunteers who are trusted by friends and family, providing a safe and familiar way to get help. This feature provides an alternative to contacting random volunteers for tasks such as reading confidential information. Simply ask your sighted friend or family member to sign up as a volunteer and then select them in the app.
Not only does Be My Eyes offer sighted volunteers, but there is also an AI assistant. Don’t want to use a sighted volunteer? Would you like to have more privacy and independence? Just go to the tab that says “Be My AI.” Then take a photo and the AI will instantly provide a detailed visual description.
“I use Be My AI regularly to read mostly mailing addresses, labels and business cards,” Trina explains. “This allows me to decide if I need to save something or if I can copy the name and number to my computer.” “The Ask Questions feature is great because I dictate a specific question to a long piece of text and the answer is simple. Instead of typing it on my computer. I’ve also used it to see what’s on my computer screen when my screen reader, JAWS, stops speaking and I can’t figure out why.”
Trina also used the Be My AI feature to take photos of greeting cards during the holiday season. “The description is usually more detailed than what a sighted assistant would give, and it is a lot of fun,” she said. “I’ve even used it to describe decorations because the verbal image is so vivid and definitely enhances the holiday.”
No need to guess. Whether it’s a list, a document, or a difficult computer interface, AI helps you navigate with confidence. Additionally, you can easily go back and get sighted help for further assistance or handle complex tasks.
Be My AI is great Traveling abroad Or locally. “There is a translation function built into the app,” said Elizabeth Salmon, a peer counselor. “When I was traveling in Europe, I used it to find out about certain signs or tickets. Sometimes there is too much information, like all the warnings and rules she read to me on the back of my train ticket in Slovakia, but I appreciate this great feature even with so much information.” “The ability to ask additional questions using AI is also helpful, such as studying the background of an image for details not included in the initial description.”
Use Applications on any smartphone Usually requires the use of your hands and fingers. Be My Eyes provides a hands-free experience. Through their partnership with RayBand Meta AI Glasses Blind and visually impaired users can contact a sighted volunteer for visual descriptions. Simply give a voice command to call a volunteer, who will see through your smart glasses’ camera and provide live audible feedback through the open-ear speakers.
Be My Eyes is constantly working to improve the app experience and find innovative ways to help blind and visually impaired people. The latest development is Be the eyes of the workplacea platform geared towards companies and organizations that want to offer supports For their blind and visually impaired employees. It’s very similar to the Be My Eyes app but is a computer program that combines artificial intelligence with live desktop support.
