
Two everyday foods may quietly clean out plaque in your arteries and lower your blood pressure — and one of them comes from a country with one of the lowest rates of coronary heart disease in the developed world.

But what really convinced me to make this video was Martha.

Well, to understand why these two foods have attracted so much research interest, we need to talk about what plaque actually is — and why it’s more complicated than most people think.
Most people assume that arterial plaque is basically just a cholesterol problem. Too much cholesterol, you get plaque. That simple.
But this is only part of the story.
Plaque often begins when the inner lining of blood vessels is damaged or irritated. When this happens, cholesterol particles, inflammatory cells, and oxidized debris begin to accumulate within the artery wall. Over time, those deposits grow. The artery becomes narrower. More solid. The blood has difficulty passing through.
This is where most people go wrong.
Think of it like a garden hose. Brand new, water flows easily. But if debris slowly builds up inside, the passage becomes smaller, and you must squeeze the same amount of water through a narrow space. Something similar can happen within your circulatory system.
And here’s where blood pressure Come.
Healthy arteries are elastic, expanding and contracting with each heartbeat. But when your arteries become stiffer, your heart has to work harder. The pressure inside the system rises.
Now this is something most people don’t realize.
Some heart attacks do not occur when an artery is completely blocked, but when a smaller plaque becomes unstable and ruptures. A clot forms. Blood flow to the heart or brain can be suddenly cut off.
That’s why researchers today are asking deeper questions than just knowing how much plaque there is. They look at oxidation, inflammation, nitric oxide production, and how efficiently the body removes cholesterol from artery walls.
This is exactly why pomegranates and nattokinase have attracted so much research interest, because they seem to affect many of those processes. Just not the same ones. Which is what makes this combination interesting.
Let’s start with pomegranate.
It’s probably not the first thing you think about when it comes to arterial health. Most people go straight to oatmeal. salmon. olive oil. But pomegranate? Not usually on the radar.
So why do cardiologists care about this?
In one well-known study, participants with narrowing of the carotid arteries — the main arteries in the neck that send blood to the brain — drank a small amount of pomegranate juice every day for a year.
What they found: improvements in markers associated with plaque buildup, and a significant reduction in oxidative stress.
The study did not show that pomegranate dissolves plaque, and it is important to be clear about that. But it does suggest that pomegranates may influence some biological processes associated with how plaque develops.
It has to do with oxidation.
Think of LDL cholesterol as a delivery truck. Its job is to transport cholesterol throughout the body, and that’s exactly what it does. The problem is what happens when the truck is damaged. This is oxidation.
Like rust that forms on a bicycle left in the rain. When LDL becomes oxidized, researchers believe it plays a more harmful role in plaque formation.
Compounds in pomegranates appear to help reduce LDL oxidation, removing one of the sparks that starts the whole process.
But this is only part of the story.
Pomegranate may also help HDL – the good cholesterol – do its cleansing job more effectively. HDL collects excess cholesterol and returns it to the liver for removal. Several studies suggest that pomegranate may improve this process.
So instead of just wondering how much cholesterol I have, researchers are asking: How well can my body actually manage this amount? These are two very different questions.
This is what surprised even the researchers: the amounts used in the studies were not large. Just a modest daily serving – a small cup of 100% pomegranate juice, or pomegranate seeds if you prefer whole food.
The goal is not perfection. It’s consistency.
But that’s the thing, pomegranates only target one part of the problem. The second food follows something completely different. Something most people have never heard of before.
Now let’s talk about natto – the enzyme it contains is called nattokinase.
This is where the research gets really interesting. Because nattokinase does not work like pomegranate. It targets a completely different part of the problem.
Most people outside of Japan have never tried NATO, and frankly, that’s understandable. It is a traditional Japanese food made from fermented soybeans. During fermentation, it produces a powerful enzyme called nattokinase, and it is this compound that caught the attention of researchers.
Fair warning about the food itself. It’s sticky. It’s chewy. It has a very strong smell. Some people like that. Others try it once and that’s enough.
But researchers became interested in the enzyme nattokinase because of how it interacts with something in the body called fibrin.
Don’t let this word throw you off. The idea is simple.
Think of fibrin like mortar in a brick wall. Bricks alone won’t hold up, you need something to hold them together. Fibrin is a structural protein involved in… Blood clotting And wound healing. Under normal circumstances, it is necessary.
But researchers also noticed fibrin in unhealthy vascular environments. Research suggests that nattokinase may help break it down, removing some of the structural material involved in those processes.
In one large study that included more than 1,000 participants, higher doses were taken nattokinase It has been linked to improvements in artery wall thickness and plaque burden – meaningful markers of cardiovascular health. The study did not claim to have erased years of plaque. But it points to a mechanism worth taking seriously.
It’s worth noting that the dose used in that study was much higher than what most off-the-shelf supplements contain – yet another reason to discuss this with your doctor before purchasing.
That’s what makes this interesting.
Pomegranate works on oxidation and cholesterol management. Nattokinase acts on structural proteins such as fibrin. Different path. Different mechanism. Same general goal – supporting healthier arteries.
That’s why researchers find this combination compelling. They do not attack the same problem from the same angle. They hit different pieces of a much larger puzzle.
Here’s something else worth knowing about nattokinase. Japan has some of the lowest rates of heart disease among developed countries. This does not mean that NATO is the cause, the Japanese diet, lifestyle, and healthcare system all play a role. But when researchers noticed these numbers, they started looking at what people in Japan eat regularly. NATO continued to emerge.
Before I show you how to get started, let me cover three mistakes most people make when it comes to arterial health. Avoid these things and you are already ahead of most people.
Mistake 1: Expecting results too quickly.
Plaque takes decades to develop. You will not feel decreased oxidation or decreased inflammation. These changes happen quietly in the background, long before you actually feel anything. Patience matters more than intensity.
Mistake 2: Focusing on one thing and ignoring everything else.
There is no single food that makes or breaks arterial health. It’s the combination — food choices, physical activity, sleep, blood sugar, stress — all working together. One brick does not build a house. But enough of it, over time, creates something solid.
Third mistake: Focusing on the cholesterol number.
Cholesterol is important – don’t get me wrong. But plaque formation involves oxidation, inflammation, vascular function, and nitric oxide. It’s not just one lab value. The goal is not just to lower cholesterol. The goal is healthy arteries. Those are not the same thing.
Here’s a simple way to actually get started. Three days. Three small actions.
Day 1: Add a small daily serving of pomegranate to your routine. A modest cup of 100% natural juice, or a handful of seeds on yogurt or in a salad. Don’t overthink it. Just start.
Day 2: Find a highly processed food that you eat regularly and replace it with something more wholesome. Not a complete fix – just one thing. Momentum starts with small victories.
The third day is the day that most people skip, but it may be the most important.
Learn about nattokinase. If you have an Asian grocery store nearby, buy some natto and try it. You either like it or you don’t – there’s usually no middle ground. If natto is not right for you, talk to your healthcare provider about whether nattokinase supplements are right for you specifically.
