Athletes, pack your bags: we’re headed to Tennessee. The Ironman Group announced today that Chattanooga has been selected as the host city for 2027 70.3 World Championships The triathlon will take place on August 28 and 29, 2027.
The “Scenic City” selection is part of a renewed five-year commitment aimed at enhancing Chattanooga’s position within the global Ironman 70.3 Worlds circuit. It was a race Perennial favourite For North American triathletes since the inaugural Ironman 70.3 Chattanooga Championships on May 17, 2015, thanks to a brisk 1.2-mile, current-assisted swim of the Tennessee River and the host city’s popular atmosphere.
“Chattanooga has already proven its ability to deliver an exceptional experience at the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championships,” said Diana Burch, IRONMAN North America and World Championships managing director. “From its scenic courses to its tremendous community engagement, we are thrilled to return in 2027 and once again showcase this iconic destination to a global audience.”
Chattanooga is no stranger to the 70.3 World Championship She hosted this event in 2017. That year was the first time the tournament was split into two days – one for men and one for women. This was factored into the decision to return after 10 years, with Ironman saying the event’s success “cemented Chattanooga’s reputation as a world-class host capable of delivering performances at the highest level.”
In 2027, Ironman expects to welcome 7,000 athletes to Chattanooga across more than 120 qualifying events worldwide, a 55% jump from the last time the city hosted a 70.3 World Championship race. Qualifiers for the 2027 World Championship It will start soon, on July 5, 2026with the European Championships Ironman 70.3 Jonköping, Ironman 70.3 Les Sables d’Olonne-Vendée, and Ironman 70.3 Muskoka all taking place this weekend.
Ironman 70.3 World Championship History

Unlike the full-distance IRONMAN World Championship, which has a distinct spiritual home in Hawaii (existence… I grew up on the island of Oahu and He moved to Kona in 1981), the 70.3 World Championship developed into a truly global phenomenon.
The inaugural IRONMAN 70.3 World Championships were held on November 11, 2006 in Clearwater, Florida (about 20 miles from the IRONMAN headquarters in Tampa). After five years in flat Clearwater (2006 to 2010), Ironman decided to move the event to Nevada, with Lake Las Vegas and Henderson, Nevada, sharing hosting responsibilities for the early September race. Athletes enjoyed the tougher course and early date, but the event still had trouble keeping up with the hype of October’s Kona Grand Prix.
That’s when Ironman realized it didn’t have to give the 70.3 worlds a home — the whole world could host the race. As perch He said Triathlete In 2024the organization realized that a fixed location did not align with its goals for the race: “It wasn’t about creating a small universe. It was about giving the 70.3 Worlds its own personality – a way to test the athletes differently, year after year.”
Since 2014, when he left Nevada, the race has moved to a new city each year, starting in Mont-Tremblant in Quebec, Canada. The success of the trial inspired Ironman to use the 70.3 Worlds as a proving ground for other ideas: In Chattanooga in 2017, the race was split into two days, with 1,500 women (professionals and age groups) competing on the first day and 2,700 men (pros and age groups) competing on the second. This split allowed Ironman to address issues of fairness in women’s racing, which had been plagued by slower pro men and faster men in the age group and chronically blighted World Championship events, resulting in a chaotic (and draft-filled) competition.
“For many years, athletes have been asking for this,” Bertsch said. “The two-day format will not only improve fairness, but will allow us to accommodate more competitors.”
And accommodate more competitors: Since its inaugural year, when 1,800 competitors took to the line, the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship has ballooned into one of the most popular events in the brand’s portfolio, with more than 6,300 athletes competing in Marbella in 2025.
