The swimming leg of a triathlon is It is supposed to be a fixed distancefrom 500 meters to 2.4 miles, depending on the race. However, your distance often becomes longer – sometimes by 10% or more – because swimming in a straight line in open water can be a real challenge.
While many variables contribute to limping while swimming in open water (e.g., current, avoiding others), one important factor comes from inside your brain; It’s called allergic drift.
How Sensitive Drift Causes You to Go Off Course in Open Water
Motivational drift is a neurological phenomenon where the brain’s sense of an object’s location in space (or in this case, water) gradually deviates from reality. This tendency is particularly common when there are no external landmarks or clear reference points, such as during open water swimming.
The term “proprioceptive drift” actually stems from a well-cited laboratory experiment called the rubber hand illusion. In this illusion, the participant’s hand is obscured from his view, but a rubber hand is placed within his view. When the real hand and the rubber hand are stroked with the paintbrush at the same time, the participant realizes that the rubber hand is their actual hand. This illusion illustrates a key concept: the brain’s map of where an object is in space is malleable and will change when one source of information (for example, the visual cue of a real hand) is missing.
So, how does this relate to open water meandering? When we swim in a pool, the linea nigra and lane lines provide continuous, stable visual fixation points that help the brain reposition the body. In open water, however, those anchors disappear, and we only get intermittent visual cues of a buoy, the shoreline, or, unfortunately, another swimmer heading in the wrong direction.
The brain also has to process other sensory information, such as the sound of water splashing or the feeling of water running on the skin. With all these signals competing for attention, the brain gradually loses track of the body and its orientation, which can cause you to veer off course.
Additionally, buoyancy affects our ability to accurately detect the position of our joints in the water, so over time, these small “errors” effectively bend our swim path. Fortunately, you can train your proprioception and improve your ability to swim in a straight line.

Tips to fix your slalom swim and stay on track in open water
Close your eyes
Swimming without visual input is one of the best ways to train proprioception. When (and only When you have a private pool, swim with your eyes closed for 4-6 times. Then pause, open your eyes, and notice the direction in which you have veered.
Swim another 4 to 6 strokes with your eyes closed, making simple mechanical adjustments to correct the drift. Then open your eyes and observe again. Repeat this several times until you start swimming straight.
Increase each eyes-closed interval to 6-8 strokes, then 8-10 strokes, and so on, until you can swim upright for longer distances without visual input.
Practice forward vision
we have to Vision practice If we want to become skilled, the practice can start in the pool. Place a water bottle or swim board on the deck at either end of your swim lane. Every 6-8 passes, lift your head (eventually just your eyes) out of the water to locate your water bottle/surfboard landmark.
You can combine this with swimming with your eyes closed, keeping your eyes closed during 6-8 strokes, only opening them to identify landmarks. Follow the same practice in open water, where you can spot a buoy or shoreline landmark every few strokes.
See it, feel it
Motor imagery is the practice of simulating movement in your mind, and is an effective strategy for training proper technique. Research suggests that when we combine motor imagery with observing movement, or watching someone (preferably ourselves) perform a skill, we may be able to better improve athletic performance.
Watch a video of yourself or someone else swimming in open water in a relatively straight line. At the same time, try to “feel” the movement elements the person in the video is doing in order to swim in a straight line, such as rotating the torso enough, keeping the elbows high, and engaging the upper back and neck muscles as you view.
Divert your attention
Open water swimming requires our brain to juggle competing sensory inputs in a relatively unnatural, horizontal body position. So, as with everything else, it pays to practice. While swimming in a pool or open water, practice shifting your attention from proprioception (noticing the mechanics of the stroke) to interoception (noticing your body’s physiological cues, such as breathing speed or muscle tension) to environmental cues (seeing the buoy, noting the locations of other swimmers).
Spend a minute or two on each, so you can practice shifting your attention on demand and prevent your brain from becoming overwhelmed with sensory input.
