If you read our Endurance News February ReportAs you know it’s been an eventful month with rule changes, new support for paratriathlon and much more. Our editors’ picks this month are quite eclectic, from an air purifier with countless benefits, to — dare we say it — life-changing socks. Check previous versions of What our editors love To find your new favorites.

I initially wanted the Dyson Purifier Hot+Cool HP1 because I needed a powerful fan for indoor cycling, but I also had a drafty garage that needed a little warming up before power sessions. One nice side effect of the HP1 was that it also purified the (horrible) air quality in the same destroyed garage.
We eventually dropped it, but I’ve found that I use the Dyson just as much, if not more, inside our house, especially after reading This is an amazing new study that demonstrated the relationship between indoor air quality and operating recovery/performance. Coincidentally, the HP1 filters out most of the pesky particles mentioned in the study — plus a lot more. With this in mind, your fan/heater/purifier now does quadruple duty as a recovery tool!

I know, I know: everyone and their uncle is wearing sweatshirts these days. But my problem with weighted vests is that they’re usually designed for uncles: bulky, chunky, and not at all designed to sit over a pair of breasts. As such, I’ve mostly avoided the whole jamming trend because crushing my boobs with a 10-pound plate isn’t my idea of a good time.
But then brands started making weight vests specifically designed for women, including GoRuck. I was sold the moment I put the Women’s Spy Ruck Jacket on my body. Instead of a solid plate on the chest, the sandbag-like weight wraps around the shoulders and back, and fits a woman’s physique much better than the “unisex” version really designed for men.
I don’t wear the vest during training sessions, but instead use it as an aid to everyday activities, whether that’s dog walks, hikes, or trips to the farmers market. I feel like my body is reacting and my posture improves when I wear it, which translates into better running form.

I’m somewhat of an endurance athlete, as I really enjoy strength training but in the right conditions. After years of fighting distraction and then becoming averse to strength training due to counting reps, I moved to timed sets and it has made a huge difference in my enjoyment of strength training. Timed groups allowed me the freedom to listen to an audiobook, interrupt my kids 99 times, and clear my head just like I would on a long flight or training ride. And suddenly I loved him.
Although it’s not space efficient, I’ve found that the same goes for having a variety of weights rather than an interchangeable set. Why? Although switching plates only takes a minute or so, I found it to be an annoying task and kept me from strength training. Plus, I like the feel of a neoprene-covered weight more than a knurled metal bar. Using cost-effective Amazon Basics weights, I got what I needed for what I would get for a one-month gym membership.

“What are those?!”
“Toe socks?!”
“Those look very strange.”
All of this – and more – will come your way the moment you reveal your five (hopefully) individually wrapped pigs in what looks like weird gloves. But don’t let the comments distract you from the joy and comfort you felt while wearing them all day.
This simple, magical invention is now the first thing I reach for in my sock drawer, unless I’m running late or my feet are still wet from the pool — which, I admit, can be a little fidgety to keep going. But once they appear, it is difficult to go back. I really had no idea how comfortable it would be to leave your toes separate — the way they’re designed — rather than cramming them into a “high-performance” compression sock that supposedly “promotes blood flow.” I personally argue that toe socks do more for overall foot function than most compression socks ever do.
I tried three different pairs – one for… Daily wearone for Runs every dayand more Excellent choice For training and racing. They all work similarly: reduce foot fatigue, allow the toes to expand naturally, reduce moisture buildup in the fabric between each toe, and reduce blisters because of it.
In the past, after a long day of walking through airports, my feet would break down due to my ongoing battle with plantar fasciitis. With toe socks, this fatigue is significantly reduced. Same thing during long content days in Kona – if I wasn’t wearing Tevas, these socks helped keep my feet cool and relatively less sweaty.
So far, no one I’ve convinced to try them has come back. And I’m willing to risk that line with the Triathlete crowd because I feel like you’ll love them too.
