The goal of Ayurveda is to create and maintain balance of mind, body and consciousness. When an imbalance arises and manifests itself as a psychosomatic disorder, it is necessary to determine whether “calming” or “cleansing” is the appropriate first step. When an individual is weak and needs nourishment, soothing (shamnam) signifies removing the cause of distress and building strength. When the shamanam is complete, or when it is not indicated, purification (shudanam) may begin.
Ayurveda uses five methods of purification called together Panchakarma. Pancha means five and Karma means work. These procedures are:
MothersTherapeutic vomiting, indicated in some cases of Kapha;
Bastitherapeutic enema is indicated in some cases of Vata
VericanaA cleansing treatment used to cleanse high pitta
Rakta mokshaliterally frees up the blood, mainly for pitta disorders
Forgetting-Giving herbal powders, oils and ghee to the nose for Vata, Pitta and Kapha
NASYA is beneficial for many disorders of Vata, Pitta and Kapha dosha. Since we are now in Kapha season, our focus should be on Nasya’s recipes and remedies for winter cleansing. Kapha’s attributes are therefore cold, heavy, dense, sluggish and cloudy winters. To balance these, we should strive for heating, drying and extended grasses.
There are five types of nasya:
Virichana forgetting: This cleansing process is performed with dry powders of herbs that stimulate the mucous membranes and is often recommended for feelings of heaviness in the head, sinus congestion, mild headaches, blocked nasolacrimal ducts, cataracts, runny nose, and hoarseness due to Kapha.
Bromana forgetting It is a dietary nasya that is more commonly used with the Vata type of confusion. Some of the mixtures used are Shatavari ghee, Ashwagandha ghee, milk or medicated ghee, oils and salts. This type of nasya is especially beneficial for nervousness, anxiety, neck stiffness, migraines and cervical spondylosis.
Shamana forgetting It is a sedative medication and is mainly used in chronic cases of dandruff, hair loss, conjunctivitis, and ringing in the ears. Various types of teas, oils and medicinal herbal extracts are used in this Nasya.
With children and politics They are decoctions and oils used together to treat vata pitta or kapha pitta disorders.
Marcia forgetting: Using the little finger, massage the inside of each nostril deeply. This helps open up deeper tissues and can be done daily at any time to relieve tension. Medicinal ghee such as Brahmi or therapeutic oils such as Siddha Soma oil are commonly used in Nasya. It is said that a deviated nasal septum can be treated through this method. This type of Nasya also enhances ojas, nourishes Sadhak Pitta and is good for meditation.
The nose is the door to the brain and consciousness. Any substance inhaled through the nose alters consciousness. Nasya acts directly on the brain (magha dhatu). The medicine taken intranasally gives clarity of perception depending on the action of the herbs. Nasal application helps in purifying the nadis or rivers of life and also changes the breathing pattern. This action occurs as follows: When inhaled, some air is transmitted to the brain through the cribriform plate in the nose. Some air presses on the mines (three membranes covering the spinal cord and brain) and the diaphragm moves up and down. This pumping action stimulates the circulation of cerebral spinal fluid and results in increased venous and arterial flow.
In general, Vacha root powder is hot, pungent and bitter; The exact energetics we need to balance Kapha disturbances. Vacha is used to take advantage of issues that indicate Virechana Kasya. Prana, after all, is our life force so we should enhance it when possible. To administer, take a pinch of calamus root powder (vasha) and inhale into each nostril. It may induce sneezing and this is a good thing as it helps balance prana and udana and opens the brain centers for greater clarity of perception.
