It’s a high-carb time of year. We have tips to help you.
Are you wondering how you’ll handle all the holiday temptations and potential stress in the coming weeks? Food and drink play a big role in December traditions. It’s normal to have concerns about how you’ll be able to stick to your low-carb diet.
Diet Doctor’s experts have some time-tested tips on how to survive—and even thrive—during this special time. Below you’ll find seven holiday situations and our tips on how to handle them.

Holiday parties can be full of tempting high-carb dishes. Plan to bring your own low-carb dishes to share, like cheese chips, crackers, or whatever you like. Discover other people’s offers too. There’s often a cheese plate, charcuterie board, or hard-boiled eggs to enjoy. But if you’re going somewhere that might not have any low-carb options, bring some low-carb foods so you can be sure you have options. You can also eat before going so you don’t feel hungry.
When you lose weight and your health improves, it’s common for friends to say so “You look great, but a little piece of this wouldn’t hurt.” or “Reward yourself, you did a very good job!“
We acknowledge these well-intentioned comments, but redirect them. “Thanks! I’ve been working hard, and I feel really good. I don’t want to risk not feeling good. So go ahead and have fun and I’ll have some of this cheese here that looks so delicious!”
Go for the call, not the carbs. Tell her: “You’re so kind! I’ve always loved your recipe. Why don’t you enjoy it and I’ll sit here and talk to you so we can catch up.”
She might offer to try to find or prepare a low-carb version of her signature dish. Emphasize how good you feel when you avoid sugar and starches.
If you feel a special cultural or familial connection to a particular dish at this time of year, you may feel as if you’re not celebrating or participating in the festivities if you go without it. But can you make a low-carb version of this iconic dish? Or can you find an alternative – something new that sounds just as delicious? Check out our Holiday Recipe Collections and Eid electronic magazine For delicious ideas.
Or take the focus away from food. Plan ahead and celebrate favorite non-food traditions.
